Web 2.0
The internet community back in September 2005 coined the shift from static pages to vibrant, dynamic, integrated media pages published not by professionals, but by amateurs, Web 2.0. This was the initial list of what constituted 1.0 and 2.0.
| Web 1.0 | Web 2.0 | |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleClick | –> | Google AdSense |
| Ofoto | –> | Flickr |
| Akamai | –> | BitTorrent |
| mp3.com | –> | Napster |
| Britannica Online | –> | Wikipedia |
| personal websites | –> | blogging |
| evite | –> | upcoming.org and EVDB |
| domain name speculation | –> | search engine optimization |
| page views | –> | cost per click |
| screen scraping | –> | web services |
| publishing | –> | participation |
| content management systems | –> | wikis |
| directories (taxonomy) | –> | tagging (”folksonomy”) |
| stickiness | –> | syndication |
Since then, lots of additional changes and technologies have occurred. The web has morphed as users changed the way it is used. This new world has made the world of advertising on the internet extremely confusing as:
(1) Less and less people are clicking or even noticing those ads;
(2) Many have disabled ad blocks altogether on their browsers;
(3) Click fraud is still a problem; and
(4) Conversion to sales has been dismally low (probably due to click fraud).
